It shows the work was tested and is safe to use.
Building control, your insurer or a future buyer may all ask to see it. Our qualified electricians test the work and give you the certificate. One landlord said our electrician “provided a certificate at a fair price for my rental property.”
What Is an EIC?
An Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) is the paperwork that comes with new electrical work. It lists each new circuit, the test results and who designed, installed and tested it.
It is not the same as an EICR. An EICR checks wiring that is already in use. An EIC shows that new work was safe when it was finished.
When Do You Need One?
You get a full EIC for a new installation, such as a rewire or an extension. You also get one for a new circuit, like a shower supply, and for a consumer unit change.
Smaller jobs, like adding a socket to an existing circuit, get a Minor Works Certificate instead. Either way, you have proof the work was tested.
Part P and Building Control
In homes, some electrical work is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations. This includes new circuits, consumer unit changes and some work in bathrooms. Notifiable work must be certified and notified to building control.
Work that was never notified can cause delays when you sell your home. Keep your EIC and building control paperwork together with your house deeds.
Testing Before Sign-Off
Our electrician tests each new circuit before it is put into use. The tests check the earth, the insulation and that the safety switches trip as they should.
If your EICR finds faults and you need a new consumer unit, that work gets an EIC too. Your certificate is usually sent within 24 to 48 hours.
